Are Unknown Toxins Causing Your Gut Health Issues?

In our continuing discussion of toxins, this week we’re going to discuss environmental toxins, specifically, ones you may not be aware are around you. We are exposed to all sorts of toxins all the time, but as in most things related to our health, knowledge is power. The more we understand the toxins, their potential impact on our bodies, and what we can do about it, the more we can take control of our health. Of course, the ultimate goal is the reduction of toxic intake, which is why this information is especially important.

One of the toxins I see on a regular basis people may not have heard of is glyphosate. Glyphosate is one of the most widely used herbicides in the United States. People apply it in agriculture and forestry, on lawns and gardens, and for weeds in industrial areas. It’s also being sprayed on our food supply, to limit weed growth. Sounds like something that shouldn’t be on your food to me.

Once glyphosate gets into your system through contact with products like Roundup or through your food, it shows up in your gut. Your immune system recognizes this as an invader, which causes your body to attack. This can create all sorts of problems in your gut including newly developed food sensitivities and other gut issues. The use of glyphosate has massively increased in the last few decades and it’s been specifically linked, not just to gut issues, but to a myriad of other issues including cancers.

Another more common toxin is BPA or Bisphenol A, is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1950s. Some research has shown that BPA can seep into food or beverages from containers that are made with BPA. Exposure to BPA is a concern because of the possible health effects on the brain and prostate glands. It can also affect children's behavior. Additional research suggests a possible link between BPA and increased blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

The truth is, toxins like this are all around us, so running away isn’t going to be a real possibility. What we have to do is limit exposure where possible and be aware when symptoms develop. That’s what we do in my office. We’re able to test for these exposures, figure out where your symptoms are coming from, and develop a plan together for how you can eliminate these toxins from your body and live your best life. Contact my office today and we can set you up with a consultation.
